Group Leader : Alan Reid
The Meteorology group would appeal to anyone who’s interested in, or curious about, the weather.
We meet at 10:00 on the 3 rd Tuesday of the month in the leader’s home and, for reasons of space, restrict the membership to 12.
We currently have two vacancies.
The members have a complete mix of backgrounds, the majority non-technical. Each
meeting is addressed by a member (not usually the leader) on any topic broadly
related to the weather. The topic is chosen by the presenter and pre-agreed with the
group. Over the years our topics have included “Weather Folklore”, “Named Winds”,
“Weather and Health”, “El Niño & La Niña”, “Proverbs & Idioms”, “The Jet Stream”,
“Weather in Art”, “The Aurora” and “Variations of climate across continents”.
If you join, you will be expected to offer (and present) a topic, in due course.
Presentations (30-45 minutes) are usually on PowerPoint, shown on the lounge TV,
but other approaches are possible and help with the technicalities is available. All our
presenters have remarked that they learned more from preparing and making a
presentation than at any other meeting There’s often a lively discussion after (and
sometimes during) the presentation. But the style is informal and friendly, rather than
intimidating.
There are huge resources freely available to anyone preparing a presention, if you
are at all capable of using a computer or Tablet and there’s help available even for
that. Presentations can include things like YouTube clips or even whole recorded
programmes.
We finish with Coffee (tea, whatever) and biscuits, over which the discussion flows
freely.
